Elucidating novel reactivity of Ni2+ in an air sensitive MOF using Diffuse UV-Vis-NIR spectroscopy

Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) are a popular subject of research. They are porous coordination polymers made up of organic linkers and inorganic modes in a crystalline arrangement. Wavelengths of light near the visible, ultraviolet, and near-infrared range are absorbed by transition metal ions in the structure of the MOF. The reactivity of these ions can therefore be probed using UV-Vis-NIR spectroscopy.

Carl K. Brozek and Mircea Dinca at MIT Department of Chemistry provided the following application note focusing on the use of Diffuse Reflectance UV-Vis-NIR under variable temperatures and low pressures to analyse Ni-MOF-5. The porous nature of the MOF powders makes them ideal for study using diffuse reflectance.
