Experience excellence
with Specac

Who are we?

At Specac we undertake design and manufacture of accessories and sample preparation solutions for Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-Ray Fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF), and near-infrared (NIR) process spectroscopy. Design and manufacture occurs at our purpose-built 33,000 square foot high-tech operation located in London. We were the very first to market a commercial diamond ATR solution with the Golden Gate, which was launched more than 25 years ago and remains a stalwart of labs around the world. We have extensive experience with different kinds of IR sampling accessories going back decades.

Our reach is global. We have offices in the UK, Singapore, China, and the USA as well as an extensive network of regional dealers across the globe. Our customers are diverse, from academia to policing and from manufacturing to cutting-edge chemical diagnostics. Our onsite demonstration laboratory, the Newton Lab, gives us the ability to test customer samples on site and provide training for users and distributors.

Our History

Specac, originally founded as Spectroscopic Accessories Ltd in 1971 by Stan Ranson and Bernard Hawker, quickly expanded its product range to include infrared accessories, optical components, and mounts, as well as HPLC valves and complete instruments for far infrared analysis and interferometry. Acquired by Cambridge Electronic Industries in 1984, Specac began its journey to becoming a leading FTIR accessory manufacturer. A strategic plan in 1990 led to relocation in 1994 to dedicated premises as Graseby Specac. From 1997 to 2015, Specac was part of Smiths Group, before being acquired by members of the executive team and Foresight Group in 2015.
In 2018, Specac was honored with the Queen’s Award for International Trade, recognizing its exceptional growth in international sales, with exports representing 90% of total sales.
Specac’s relocation in July 2019 to the Specac Science & Innovation Centre marked a significant milestone. Continuing its growth trajectory, Specac focuses on developing new products and expanding into new application areas. Today, Specac employs around 80 people with offices in the USA and UK, boasting a global network of distributors and dealers.
