Specac’s employee “Green Team” is a cross-functional Think Tank where employees can meet and discuss ways to reduce our environmental impact. It’s led by volunteers from across the company who devote time each week to discussing new and current initiatives.

The team has promoted several simple, yet highly effective initiatives within the company over the past year or so.

Green team initiatives

Colour coding recycling bins

January 2024

A simple suggestion implemented recently by the team was to colour code our recycling bins and refuse sacks to make sure that waste from each was not mixed into a single waste stream once it was collected.

Recycling used coffee grounds

February 2023

A new initiative to recycle used coffee grounds from our on-site coffee machines. Everyone is encouraged to empty the old grounds into buckets provided close by the coffee machines, which are then collected on Fridays for a variety of uses: for the green-fingered, the grounds can be used to make compost or applied directly to soil as a fertilizer. They also contain compounds that make them effective insect repellents.

Environmental Awareness Board

January 2023

The monthly environmental awareness board, put together by employees themselves, to promote the environmental issues most important to them. Each month it is updated with new information on the environmental challenges and issues of human health and long-term prosperity.

Strong company commitment to Green Initiatives

The work of the green team has benefited from strong buy-in from the Leadership Team – even our Managing Director is a regular participant! Such support is vital to ensure that words become actions. It also nicely complements our continued commitment to ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certifications.

We’re looking forward to seeing what the Green Team can do in the coming months and years.
