Application note no. AN26-02
The interaction of vapor-phase compounds with minerals such as metal oxide powders is often studied using diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS). DRIFTS allows for an efficient approach to collect and analyze diffusely scattered light in reflection mode. When studying the interaction of organophosphorus (OP) compounds such as dimethyl methylphosphonate (DMMP) with minerals, care must be taken to avoid interactions between the OP compound and the reaction chamber as these compounds are known to be catalyzed by metals such as stainless steel – if present, catalytic products could interfere with the intended measurements.
In addition, for photocatalytic characterizations, we need to ensure that the sample remains at a constant temperature during photoirradiation so as to avoid any potential thermal decomposition effects. This application note shows how we successfully used a custom Specac- Harrick Scientific Silcolloy-coated High Temperature Reaction Chamber with a cooling cartridge in combination with a Specac-Harrick Scientific Praying Mantis diffuse reflection accessory to characterize the interaction between dimethyl methylphosphonate and titania.
