In: Harrick Praying Mantis

For in-situ and operando analysis of powder catalysts and other materials that mediate reactions between gaseous reactants, the Harrick Praying Mantis is the most complete solution available. The Praying Mantis can be set up for either infrared or UV-Vis spectroscopy experiments across a range of reaction temperatures, pressures, and gas environments.
- Infrared, UV-Vis, or Raman spectroscopy enabled.
- Customisable reaction chambers for high temperature (up to 910 °C), low temperature (to LN2 temperatures) or ambient conditions.
- Photocatalysis-ready with additional illumination windows.
Specac’s veteran Selector and Environmental Chamber was a good combination, but lacked the degree of flexibility and custom options of the Praying Mantis. We are saying goodbye to it in 2026.
In: Harrick Seagull Variable Angle Reflection Accessory
Out: Specac Monolayer Grazing Angle Accessory

Harrick Seagull
The Seagull is a versatile variable angle reflection accessory that can also double up as a variable angle ATR. Its range of incident angles run from near-normal at 5° to grazing angle at 85° and it can also be equipped with heating stages for controlled temperature analyses.
It replaces Specac’s Monolayer/Grazing Angle accessory.

Out: Specac Fixed Angle Reflection Accessory


Harrick’s range of external reflectance accessories are significant upgrade on what was present in the Specac portfolio until now. They provide fixed angle specular reflectance at angles ranging from 8° to 75°, perfect for analysis of samples deposited on specular reflective substrates.
A particular highlight is the RefractorReactor, which brings in-situ analysis under specular reflectance back to the Specac catalogue for the first time in decades. This cell can be heated to 500 °C and pressurised up to 2 atmospheres.
Stars for the future



The Harrick ConcentratIR2 Multiple Reflection ATR is a multiple reflection ATR that packs a large number of beam reflections into a concentrated area. Multiple reflections increase the sensitivity to low-absorbance species in the sample, whether because they are at low concentrations (μg/ml) or because they intrinsically absorb less radiation. The ConcentratIR2 manages this in very small quantities of sample (<10 ml).
As a solution for protein analysis, for example, it provides additional clarity in the Amide I and II regions, while helping avoid the intense water band absorptions, and does this with low analyte concentration and in small sample quantities.
The same results can be achieved with transmission measurements, but the workflows and sample prep routines associated with ATR measurements are much more convenient for most labs.
It is also possible to evaporate the solvent/buffer off an ATR, leaving only a protein film for analysis. This reduces the influence of the solvent (e.g. water) on the collected spectra.
Continuing support
Where products have been retired in favour of alternatives from the Harrick portfolio, or discontinued as part of normal life cycle management, support remains available.
If you have one of these products, rest assured that you needs for spares and replacement parts will continue to be supported for at least three years or as long as it remains possible to source the parts.
