Part 1 of this workshop, we discuss the capabilities of the Praying Mantis accessory from Specac/Harrick in combination with the Cary 5000 UV-VIS/NIR System. It is a critical accessory for assessing the
diffuse reflectance of small volumes of powders. Additional sampling capabilities through specialized reaction chambers allow for the control of sample pressure, temperature, and environment for catalyst studies.
In Part 2 of this workshop, we look at performing measurements on the Cary 5000 UV-VIS/NIR Spectrophotometer with the Praying Mantis accessory from Specac/Harrick. The unique design of this accessory is key for assessing the diffuse reflectance of small volumes of powder. We will discuss installation of the Praying Mantis accessory and show setup of the Cary 5000 for measurement.

Jim Delaney
Applications Scientist Team Lead
Jim is the Applications Team Manager at Specac, with over 10 years of experience supporting advanced spectroscopy applications across research, industrial, and commercial environments. He leads a global applications team that partners closely with sales and product management, providing technical leadership throughout the customer engagement process.
Jim works directly with customers to evaluate samples, optimize measurement approaches, and enable successful implementation of spectroscopy solutions. He also plays an active role in special/custom application development, technical training, and guiding new product direction through close collaboration with customers and B2B partners.


Scott Melis, PhD
Application Scientist – Agilent Technologies, Inc.
Scott Melis has a PHD in Physics from Georgetown University in Washington, DC and started with Agilent in 2021 as a Molecular Spectroscopy Application Scientist. In his graduate work, Scott studied nanoparticle formation and growth for a variety of applications. Projects that he worked with include developing processes to deposit and characterize semiconducting molecular nano-cocrystals for use in optoelectronic devices as well as controlling polymer nanoparticle size through rapid mixing conditions.
